Our History

WTS was created for one reason: to provide exceptional service in solid waste collection.

Wayne Smith purchased Bluegrass Industrial & Commercial Services (BICS) from Joe Lucas in 1988. BICS was the only roll-off container provider in Hardin County, servicing industrial and construction customers. In 1993, BICS sold their assets to another waste company and Wayne was hired as Operations Manager of the Elizabethtown facility. They serviced residential, commercial, and roll-off customers, and Wayne and his employees continued to provide their customers with the service they expected. In 1999, another national company purchased that company. Wayne did not agree with their business philosophy, especially in their treatment of their customers and employees. So when he was ordered to sign a non-compete agreement "or else", that made the decision easier to choose the "or else".

One week later, he bought his first roll-off truck, and with his wife Barbara providing the dispatching and bookkeeping services, WTS was born. They provided their new customers with a level of service of which they were not accustomed, and word-of-mouth references provided one new customer after another.

In March 2000, Nick Russ joined Wayne as a partner in WTS to provide residential and commercial service to residents in the Elizabethtown city limits. Nick left WTS in October 2006 to pursue other business opportunities.

Since that time, WTS has grown to 45 full-time employees. Jodie Hart joined WTS to help Barbara in the office in January 2004. In September 2005, WTS was awarded the contract for Larue County and we added 2 driver/tipper teams. In September 2006, WTS was awarded the contract for Hardin County. WTS purchased a portion of Borders Disposal Service and hired 18 of their drivers and tippers and Heather Waggoner joined the office full-time. In July 2007, Gary Floyd joined WTS as General Manager. In April 2008, WTS was awarded the contract for Meade County and we hired 10 of their drivers and tippers and Glenda Gowan joined the office full-time.
